===== A message from the 'makahwhaling' discussion list ===== BE THERE! ----------------- The Port Angeles rally is shaping up to be a big event! Here's the chance for you to join with other like-minded people and really show your support for the gray whales... The Peninsula Citizens for the Protection of Whales (PCPW) invites you to attend the Clallam County Commission meeting on June 8, 1999 at 10:00 am. A BIG show of support will demonstrate to the Commission that it is high time they adopt a resolution condemning the Makah whale slaughter. After the meeting, a rally will be held in front of the Clallam County courthouse at 12:00 noon. There will be speakers, guests and even a celebrity or two... (???) If there is only ONE rally you are able to attend- THIS ONE IS IT! Spread the word about this event far and wide..... we have heard from people in at least five different states already, and plenty more right here in Washington. Come one, come all, and pass the word... It's time to make our stand right here, folks! Contact Chuck Owens (360) 928-3048, or Dan Spomer (360) 317-6345 DIRECTIONS: Take Highway 101 to downtown Port Angeles, take a left on Lincoln St. The location is at 4th and Lincoln, across from Safeway ***** NEED A RIDE? "Due to several logistical and other issues," said Anderson, "the demonstration has been postponed until further notice." ***** WALL STREET JOURNAL ARTICLE ----------------------------------------------------- Wednesday, June 2, 1999 PILLAGING NEAR YOU: VOSS THE TERRIBLE At first I was outraged by the bloody spectacle of the Makah tribe's whale hunt that I saw broadcast on TV news. I was concerned over the moral aspects of allowing a group of people murder what we now know is an intelligent, highly sentient creature, merely to revive a primitive culture. However, after reading your supportive May 25 editorial "A Whale of a Hunt" and giving the matter some thought, I've come to realize that the Makahs are right. It's important that each of us reassert our ties to our ancestors. Therefore, being of Scandinavian ancestry, I intend to go to the nearest Sons of Norway hall and recruit some warriors to recreate the glorious culture of my Viking ancestors by pillaging and burning a small town or two. Knowing how strongly the Makahs feel about preserving cultural roots, I hope they won't mind volunteering one of their villages for my raiding party's first cultural awareness project. To the longboats! Jeffrey Voss Charlotte, NC *****
